Christmas time in the Czech Republic
![]() |
The Christmas time in the Czech Republic is normally very hectic. Tons of people on the streets trying to buy the present for their friends and relatives. The place where I live - Prague - is incredibly full of people and the centre is mainly overcrowded with turists. Apart of the bit of stress is Prague full of nice christmas markets where you can get mull and nice donuts to eat. You can buy there as well decorations for your christmas tree or some small presents. You can find one of the biggest markets on the Old Town's square.

A week before the Christmas Eve you can find on the streets maybe a bit curious thing. There are a quite big tanks with living carps in it (see picture). You can choose one and bring it home with you. Alive or dead. It's just because our traditional meal for the Christmas Eve is a fried carp with potato salad (see picture).

When I was a child I remember having a living carp in our bath for one or two days.
The most important day for children and of course as well for the adults is the evening of 24th December. The whole family gathers to eat the Christmas Eve dinner and after that suddenly a little bell rings. This tone recognize every single child - "Ježíšek" came and brought the presents! The whole family goes to the christmas tree and unpack the gifts (see picture).

Some families sing carols, e.g. this one - "Tichá Noc"
some go than for a walk, some stay just at home and enjoy the czech fairy tales in the TV, some families do some czech christmas traditions. One interesting tradition is so called "pouring of slug". You take a spoon and a bit of slug and you heat it. Than you pour it into the cold water. The slug creates some shape which tells you more about your future.
I am already looking forward to celebrate this unique day.
