Advent

What does it mean?
Advent (from the Latin word "advenio", meaning "to come", "the coming of Christ our saviour") is a holy season of the Christian church -
the period of expectant waiting and preparation for the celebration of the Nativity of Christ, also known outside the Church as the season of Christmas.

The western Advent season lasts 22-28 days and includes four Sundays. The first Advent is on Sunday between 27th November and 3rd December.
Today is the first Sunday in the Advent and the new church year begins in the catholic and evangelic churches. The theme of readings and teachings during advent
is often to prepare for the [Second Coming] while commemorating the First Coming of Christ at Christmas.

Traditions: In particular for children there is the Advent calendar with different characteristics.
Mostly they have 24 windows and the first window will be opened on the 1st of December.
A further tradition is the Advent wreath: The Advent wreath indicates with the four candles to the light that Christ brought in the world.
Traditionally the candles are purple, because in antiquity, purple dye was very expensive and it was the colour of royalty.

We use purple for Advent because it is the season of the coming of the King.

Today we light the first candle of the Advent wreath.
Historically, the candles have no more meaning than a countdown. That is, they originally stood for 4, 3, 2, and 1.
The meaning of the church of the candles are Hope (1st candle), Love (2nd candle), Joy (3rd candle), or Peace (4th candle).
